Dreamtime
Dreamtime
The term ‘Dreamtime’ is drawn from the Australian aboriginal concept of the spirit world, where magical visions and mystical creatures abide. I have adopted it to describe the experience of patterns and visions of the various stages of dreaming. Like the experience of ruminating on a subject, the dream experience sometimes places novel thoughts in conjunction with one another. Unlike the experience of waking thought, the combinations of images are undirected, out of our control and seemingly random. The human mind seeks order and begs for some kind of explanation to the disorder of our dreams. Sometimes I have vivid dreams in which I try to work with my daily concerns. In dreams I can relive past conversations or even work on paintings, just as if I were in my studio. If ever there seemed a connection between artist and Shaman, I would think it would lie in this Dreamtime dimension.

The Dreamtime paintings, like the ‘Rumination’ series, explore the activity of thought itself. For me, the experience of trying to comprehend a new concept requires a mental sorting process in which I try to place like things, motions or structures together, by linking the new information to experiences of my past. Sometimes the results are in accordance with the reality we know and at other times we end up with a new thing, born of that creative thought.
